第一天...永远那么灿烂

Currently listening to: Lucky - Jason Mraz ft. Colbie Caillat

I realised i forgot to mention 2008 marks the year i turned 21 and the year i had the biggest birthday bash ever. Ok. Back to today's entry.

This is going to be my last post before school officially starts tomorrow. I've aligned my priorities and probably would update somewhere nearer to CNY. Until then... =)

MC '09

Nerdy Nerdy.

Heart the Stage! *Points to the back*

There was a performance opportunity at Marina Barrage to usher in the New Year so we headed there! It's a really inaccessible place with a gorgeous view! =) We walked, ate, took photos and left when our segment ended. Dinner at New York New York before i headed to JY's house for the countdown. Reached home at 4am.

I did not send out New Year greetings this year seeing i've incorporated it with the X'mas ones, except for those i met up on 31st itself. So here are the few lovely people whom i received greetings from.

2008: Change is the only Constant.

Summing up the entire year in two words: Messy but Gratifying

ORDing on Chinese New Year Eve was said to be auspicious and i believed so for the first few months after that as life was good. However, life took a downturn when school started in August. I guess i underestimated how hectic school would be! I guess that was partly the reason why i under-performed in my first semester. That would not happen again.

My passion for music rekindled in a much different way. It's scary how i suddenly became into it all over again! Talking about music, i attended A-Mei's concert this year and it was the BEST concert i've ever been to in my life. I was impressed again and again by her vocals and you could say that was part of the reason i was so into music again. I also saw Rihanna in flesh and blood, along with thousands of people. This new found passion also took me places, like getting the chance of a lifetime. But i let it slip through my fingers as it was not what i was looking for and it came at the wrong time. It maybe sound stupid but i live on the belief that opportunities will come and go and the right one will come along if i put in enough effort. Oh while i'm on this, I really do not appreciate negativity from people who think they can diss my efforts without thinking.

Perhaps it's part of growing up, coupled with the increase in self-expectations and expectations from others, i've become less sociable and more private this year. I'm no longer the happy, sociable person people used to know. I guess I'm also just too tired at the end of each day to play the game of friendships. This year, I made a great number of new friends, and they are a motivating bunch of fun-loving peeps who share the same passion as me.

In 2009 ... I want to be better.
Better on stage, better in dance, and better in my studies.
Like what laoshi said, sometimes, you have to fight for your own opportunities and sometimes, it's just depending on your luck! =)

RIHANNA! Live in Singapore!

I attended Rihanna's concert one month ago! Traveled down to the indoor stadium with Peter Laoshi cos i was practising my song at MC and it happens that Laoshi also has tickets to the concert!

On the whole the concert was quite satisfying, in the sense that she sang ALL of her hits. They include Disturbia, SOS, Unfaithful, Don't Stop the Music, Shut up and Drive, Hate that i Love You, Take a Bow, Umbrella... However, the short duration was rather disappointing! Don't get me wrong, Rihanna shone on stage, but the rundown kinda sucked! I absolutely hated the constant repeating of "I love you Singapore!". I mean we get the idea the first time round.

Sad to say, one of the highlights of the show was when her mic malfunctioned in the opening track "Disturbia" and she was so pissed with the sound crew. That was CLASSIC. =P Other than that... it was just like the DVD.

"When the sun shines, we’ll shine together
Told you I'll be here forever
Said I'll always be your friend
Took an oath I'ma stick it out till the end
Now it's raining more than ever
But we'll still have each other
You can stand under my umbrella"

December's a crazy month for me. But it's 'fun-filled' la, if you look at it from one perspective, otherwise, it's bland, repetitive and a little boring. Oh and because of 'that', i'm a little moody of late, well, at least i have 'Brothers and Sisters'. =)

A-Mei's STAR Concert.

I've been to quite a number of concerts and A-Mei's STAR Concert which i attended earlier this month could be said as one of the best i've attended so far. I laughed, danced, jumped, screamed and sang along with her for 3 hours straight, She was, simply put - phenomenal. Thanks to John for the photos.

She kicked off the concert with a number of fast and familiar numbers to an extremely 'high' crowd. The crowd needed no prompting and was high throughout the entire 3 hour concert. She was a natural on stage, dancing and singing at ease with her powerful vocals.

I especially loved her emotional ballads which she belted out which are all filled with emotions. They include 勇敢, 如果你也听说, 人质, 我要快乐 and many more. Her live performance of 原来你什么都不要 could be said as my favourite song for the entire performance. The arrangement of the song was slightly altered and it had a grandeur effect when performed lived, and A-mei, being the diva that she is, brought out every single emotion and flavour of that song.

Another segment that i enjoyed would be the part when she sang a couple of 'non-hits' which are very popular. Songs like 我无所谓, 剪爱, 我恨我爱你, 别在伤口洒盐 brought back fond memories and a strong familiarity caused the crowd to cheer every song she sang.

As i mentioned earlier, the crowd was high throughout the concert and the mix of fast and slow numbers made it difficult to take a moment to rest. My favourite fast hit for the night would have to be 夏天的浪花 which was a real crowd pleaser. The concert ended on an extremely high note with everyone off their seats dancing and screaming along.

PS: 'Busy' for projects this week is OVER! But 'Busy' for everything else just started. I'm glad the weekends are here... so glad. =)

Take a Bow / Disturbia.

To mark the start of my 3 day break, i'm doing something i haven't done in a long while - sharing the album currently on constant playback in my i-pod touch. Rihanna's 'Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded' has 2 new singles, which has the potential to become big hits.
'Take a Bow' and 'Disturbia' are the latest additions to this album and i must say i totally dig both songs, like listening to it umpteen times daily to justify my love for these 2 latest hits. 'Take a Bow', i have no idea how to describe this song. It grows on you. 'Disturbia' is a club song like 'Don't Stop the Music', only much much better, i feel. I first heard it on Perezhilton and I'm pretty sure it'll be a club hit soon.
I especially love this latest version of her re-released album due to the great number of songs i like. The original version consists of the scarily successful 'Umbrella' from last year and the famed singles/tracks that followed - 'Shut Up and Drive', 'Don't Stop the Music' and 'Push Up on Me'. This reloaded version gave me all the reason to get the album. 'Cry' was previously released as a single in UK and its been on my playlist since last year.

The mandopop scene has been such a great disappointment recently that i swear by my i-pod that i would not upload any latest mandarin songs unless they are from my favourite few, who are currently M.I.A.

Happy Boy again.

I'm a happy boy over the weekend so i shall update..

I bought and listened to Tanya Chua's Goodbye and Hello. Good stuff. =) Tracks i would recommend include 当你离开的时候, 空白格,越来越不懂, 走过的路. Somehow, the lyrics for 当你离开的时候 caused me to be overwhelmed by emotions. Oh no! Get a copy of Tanya's album at all cd stores now and listen ok! =)

Having reclaimed my personal space (finally). I set out to do what i've been procrastinating - packing my luggage. Tough stuff. I haven't traveled out of the country ever since i entered army so i'm really quite excited about this trip. Saturday night was dedicated to this task with Stefanie Sun's HK concert DVD playing on my laptop, twice.. Incidentally, she won 8 related and individual awards at SHA. Congratulations are in order but this entry is about My Weekend so *focus*..

I spent most of Sunday sleeping, after every meal. So basically i slept the entire day. That's because i sprained my right neck/shoulder/back. So i chose to lie in bed that move around bearing all that agony.

I'm a happy boy this week cos it's 'rest' week. Have a great week ahead okok... =)

++ mUsic+Alk (12) - A-Mei "Star"

Album: Star
Artiste: A-Mei 张惠妹
Rating: 3.5/5

First and foremost, EMI Music is real good at selecting first hits for artistes under her belt. Jolin's 舞娘, Stefanie Sun's 逆光 and now A-Mei's 如果你也听说. However, some parts of the album tracks pale in comparison to its first hit, which is a pity. But of course, i have my favourites.

Upon playing the cd, the first track that greets you is a fast tempo macarena sound alike titled 永远的快乐 which sounded unappealing to many people who had listened to it. However, i felt it was a decent effort and i love her voice!!!

As usual, the selling point of mandarin pop albums would be its ballads, and this album definitely has some hardcore extremities that would make you cry your eyeballs out... after you listen for 10000 times. The first hit 如果你也听说 is one that grew on me from the first time i heard and i'm still putting it on constant repeat even NOW. Other ballads that i feel are good are 你是爱我的 which is really tear jerking, 快乐眼泪 which i felt has superb lyrics.

My FAVOURITE TRACK is 知己, which is a sad reality of life that being friends with the one you love aint that easy after all but at least, it's worth it. It's lyrics

还好变成了知己 起码随时看到你 哭泣或欢天喜地 可以陪你
是没有差到哪里 相处还算和气 就差那么一句 我爱你...

are beautiful and meaningful.

Somehow i feel mandarin albums should stick to the conventional ideas cos experimenting would lead to disastrous results. 4 tracks in A-Mei's Star are supposed to link up to a "Music Story" but to me, all 4 tracks sounded unappealing. at all. Pity pity. What's more, there's this original english track titled "Don't Sail Away" that made me ROFL after listening. Well, i guess getting the correct lyricist is important cos they wouldn't pen something like "... that seemed to me quite strange..." or "Inside, i played chess with destiny, i saw a way to win so easily". It just sounds funny to me. LOL.

In conclusion, this album holds more promise than the previous but at some point, it should not try to be too creative. Just, stay focus on the music, not trying to squeeze a story out of 4 songs.

++ thank you for your support

Without the support of you guys, i would not have won. Thanks! (=

My ardent fans... lol. jk. My branch!

*engrossed*

So it was a singing competition based on voting. Naturally the odds are against you if you have a really lousy reputation. Thus i did not hope to take away anything except another on-stage experience. Never did i dream of ultimately emerging victorious. Still... i have to say, that no matter how well i sang, its all the recognition and support that allowed me to take away something more than just an experience. I thank you all. (=

the (dumb) method of voting and the prize presentation.

Tim, Alex, me, Dex. (left) tired people. (right)

I could not upload the videos for my 2 performances because its too large for you-tube. So if you really want to view it, tell me ok? =P I sang Mayday's 纯真 for the semi's and 陈小春's 我爱的人 for the finals. It was a total change from my originally prepared songs because the song i wanted was of another key and the system disallowed the changing of keys. However, i did better for the impromptu song. hurhur. So preparation does not necessarily lead to perfection. How ironic.

me and Mick (left) me and Alex (right)

After the event ended, i watched SHREK 3 with Dex, Mick, Alex, Joseph. I guess the movie is entertaining to a certain extent but it pales in comparison to its previous, more successful prequels. Still, it's kinda relaxing after a grueling and intense day for me. Apologies for looking tired in the photos. I am.

(=

Lastly, i just wanna say im taking a break from all that singing lessons and KTVing cos it's been rather crazy these few weeks. So yea, i shall focus on other stuff like my course and other aspects of my life. Thanks again and have a great weekend ahead. (=
